The Stairway Manufacturer’s Association has printed their interpretation of the International Residential Code (IRC) 2000 Building Code as it relates to staircases. It is, indeed, a handy reference for contractors, homeowners and stair installers. Whether your community has adopted the code espoused by the IRC, however, is not mine to say. It is a good idea to contact your permit office to determine whether they have, in fact, adopted it. If they have not, ask them to fax or email their code restriction for staircase design and construction.
