The age old debate that divides interior designers the world over still rages today. Weighing the pros and cons of any window covering is a process which involves checking off certain criteria. How expensive are they? How easy are they to maintain? There are many boxes that need to be ticked, the most important one being perhaps the ‘do they look good’ box.

As with many other aspects of interior design, window covering depends on preference, budget, shceme and a number of variables which cannot be appled across the board. However we can make a general assessment to explore if blinds have thrown off their old institution image, for a new window covering chic.

Blinds have traditionaly been associated with offices, institutional buildings and other structures which need durability, versatility and ease of maintenance. Now with many modern interior designers starting to incorporate modern blinds designs into domestic spaces, we are seeing home owners enjoy the traditional benefits of blinds combined with innovative new designs.

Cheap blinds can be found in many different styles with many top interior designers reverting to styles of blinds that have been around for some time. We are seeing an increasing number of traditional and event ancient designs creeping back into showcase homes.

Blinds were used by various ancient civlisations including the Chinese, the Egyptians and the Persians. These ancient window coverings then landed in the West, forming the famed Venetian blinds we are so familiar with.

For example, ancient Egyptian blinds were originally made from a mesh of reeds to enable privacy with ventilation. Today interior designers use many revamped designs of these ancient designs. Venitian blinds are constantly being recreated and you can now even design your own custom blinds.

In today's interior design marketplace functionality and the aesthetic need to combine, this has been acheived by modern blinds and this has seen an increasing demand. This increase in requirement has lead to new designs, revamping the image of blinds and pushing to the forefront of window covering in modern interior design.
